Influence of grain size and grain boundary misorientation on the fatigue crack initiation mechanisms of textured AZ31 Mg alloy

چکیده

The deformation and crack initiation mechanisms were analyzed in a textured AZ31B-O Mg alloy subjected to fully-reversed, strain-controlled cyclic along the rolling direction after 50 cycles (approximately 33% of fatigue life). Distinct bands corresponding pyramidal slip or tensile twins found 538 grains out 2100 grains. Slip trace analysis showed that 72.3% 18.4% twin boundaries. Both twinning was only 9.1% with bands. Cracking widespread cycles. Grain boundary cracks ≈15% small (< 20 µm) they mainly associated high angle grain boundaries (>40º). also occur by transgranular parallel large (>45 µm). majority (>60%) these presented

Measuring the Influence of Grain-Boundary Misorientation on Thermal Groove Geometry in Ceramic Polycrystals

We have used electron backscattered diffraction patterns to determine the misorientation of 201 adjacent pairs of grains in a magnesia polycrystal. The width and depth of the thermal grooves formed by these same grain boundaries were also measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). By simulating the errors associated with the AFM observations and comparing our observations to existing data for m...

Misorientation Dependence of the Grain Boundary Energy in Magnesia

Geometric and crystallographic data obtained from a well annealed magnesia polycrystal have been used to specify the five macroscopic degrees of freedom for 4665 grain boundaries. The results indicate, that for this sample, the five parameter grain boundary character space is fully occupied. A finite series of symmetrized spherical harmonics has been used to approximate the misorientation depen...

The Effect of Ferrite Grain Size on the Fatigue Behavior of Ferrite-martensite Dual-phase Steels

The effect of ferrite grain size on the fatigue and tensile properties of dual phase steels with a 0.25 volume fraction of martensite (Vm) under different heat treatments was investigated. The heat treatments were homogenized at 1200 oC along with several subsequent normalizations at 910 oC, resulting in different microstructures and mechanical properties. After heat treatment, the obtained ste...

The role of grain boundaries on fatigue crack initiation – An energy approach

In this paper, we construct a model for prediction of fatigue crack initiation based on the material’s microstructure. In order to do so, the energy of a persistent slip band (PSB) is monitored and an energy balance approach is taken, in which cracks initiate and the material fails due to stress concentration from a PSB (with respect to dislocation motion). These PSBs are able to traverse low-a...

Material grain size and crack size influences on cleavage fracturing.

A review is given of the analogous dependence on reciprocal square root of grain size or crack size of fracture strength measurements reported for steel and other potentially brittle materials. The two dependencies have much in common. For onset of cleavage in steel, attention is focused on relationship of the essentially athermal fracture stress compared with a quite different viscoplastic yie...
